I couldn’t go on a road trip to France and not visit the place where we used to spend our summer holidays. That was, in fact, part of the reason why I embarked on my “French adventure”. I wanted to spend a day or two exploring the area around Bergerac, revisiting some of our favourite places so I needed a good base. A quick search on the Internet returned La Chartreuse du Bignac and I decided to book a room. Here is my honest review as a paying guest of La Chartreuse du Bignac in Bignac, France.
Location of La Chartreuse du Bignac
As the name suggests, this hidden gem of a hotel is in Bignac, near Bergerac. It sits on a 12 acre plot on top of a hill, overlooking the valley and its vineyards. It’s peaceful and quiet, yet only a short drive to Bergerac.
It is ideally placed for exploring The Dordogne too, with some of its main towns situated only a short drive away.
I used it as a base to explore the area and even went as far as Saint-Cirq-Lapopie for a day out. Although, I should point out that there are many other places nearby which are worth a visit first!
Style and Character
Style, character and charm come in abundance at La Chartreuse du Bignac. The original building dates back to the 17th century and it has been restored in keeping with that period. There are exposed stone walls and beams in the rooms, as well as plenty of other original features throughout the property.
The grounds are landscaped and beautifully maintained. There are terraced lawns, a lake, herb garden, an orchard and much more. If that’s not enough for you, there is also a pond which is home to two black swans!
Service and Facilities
Services and facilities such as a free car park, Wi-Fi, laundry (to name but a few) come as standard. The staff are smart, polite, respectful and very good at what they do and the service they provide.
I was greeted by Anzhelika who made me feel very welcome straight away. She knew who I was and had everything already prepared for me so that there were no endless questions to answer and forms to fill-in. She gave me a tour of the property and then she showed me to my room.
I had the deluxe room which was very spacious indeed. King-size bed, table with chairs and separate armchairs, wardrobe with a full length mirror next to it and even a coffee machine, so that I could make my own barista quality hot drinks.
The bathroom was white and spacious with a big mirror across the washbasin. There was a large bath with a shower overhead, complete with soft towels and complimentary toiletries too.
The patio doors led to my own sun loungers and table on the lawn outside where I used to have a drink and enjoy the sunset.
Food and Drink
Of course La Chartreuse comes with its own gastronomic restaurant on site. The resident chef prepares exquisite dishes based on local seasonal produce. Dining there is an experience which I recommend, especially if you have a reason to celebrate.
