What do you do when you find yourself in the middle of nowhere in a foreign country, on your own and without a booked hotel to go to? Well, I don’t know about you but I entered “Hotels” in the “Points of Interest” option on my SatNav and picked up a name that I liked. Half an hour later, I was at Le Manor Saint Thomas in Amboise, Loire Valley in France.

I was greeted by the most charming of hoteliers by the name of Isabelle. Even though it was 9pm, she treated me as if I was the first guest to arrive. I decided to stay for a couple of nights and this is my honest review as a paying guest at Le Manor Saint Thomas in Amboise.

Location of Le Manoir Saint Thomas

The hotel is in Amboise – a charming town with its own castle in the heart of the Loire Valley in France. Le Manoir Saint Thomas is on the edge of the town centre but close enough for you to walk to town and explore it on foot at your leisure. I suggest you walk down to the bridge at sunset and take some photographs of Château d’Amboise.

Le Manor Saint Thomas is ideally positioned to use as a base for exploring the Loire Valley. Its most famous chateaux are within a short drive away.

Style and Character

As the name suggests, Le Manoir Saint Thomas is a manor house. It stands in a beautiful garden with lawns and seating areas, separated by gravelled paths and driveways. Perfect for alfresco breakfast and/or glass of wine in the summer evenings.

The interior of the house is in keeping with the overall style of the property. The rooms are spacious with high ceilings and big windows. The furniture is traditional and functional to compliment the size and style of this impressive manor house.

Service and Facilities

Le Manoir Saint Thomas offers everything you are likely to need during your stay. It has a private car park, Wi-Fi with good signal throughout the property, minibar in the rooms and room service.

What makes this place special and remarkable is Isabelle. She is one of the most welcoming and caring hostesses I’ve come across. As I said above, and it is worth repeating, I arrived well after 9pm, she asked me if I was hungry and made me a pasta bowl, which I had in my room. Most places would not even bother to ask, let alone cater for me after 9pm!

Rooms

My room was very spacious and comfortable indeed. It had a king size bed, a desk, TV, built-in wardrobe, minibar and very high ceilings with exposed beams. The two big windows made the room very light too. The bathroom was spacious and clean. It had his and hers washbasins and a deep bath with an overhead shower.

I even had my own slippers with Le Manor Saint Thomas coat of arms embroidered on them. That coat of arms in fact was part of the design on all towels and bathrobes too.

Food and drink

Le Manoir Saint Thomas doesn’t have a restaurant on site but it offers breakfast and room service. You have a choice of pasta or Croqe Monsieur. Both very tasty and filling. There are drinks in the minibar but, as you might expect it, they come at premium prices.

If you prefer to dine out, all of the restaurants and bars in Amboise’s town centre are a short walk from the hotel.
