My partner and I discovered Le Moulin de l’Abbaye on our first holiday to France. We had lunch at its Michelin Star restaurant and we kept coming back every time we were in The Dordogne region of France. It was inevitable that I should stay at the hotel on my first solo visit to France. Here is my honest review as a paying guest of Le Moulin de l’Abbaye in Brantôme, France.
Location of Le Moulin de l’Abbaye
The location of this charming place couldn’t be more idyllic. It sits on the riverbank alongside the Abbey and if you look at it from the bridge, you may be forgiven to think that it is a small island. It’s on the edge of the old town of Brantôme; close enough to see the tourists and enjoy the views but away from the main hustle and bustle.
Style and Character
Originally a watermill, Le Moulin de l’Abbaye has been converted into a stylish 4 star hotel full of charm and character. The main building is surrounded by the running water of the river Dronne It has an abundance of tables for alfresco dining on one of its terraces, overlooking the river and its residents ducks. If you prefer to look out to town and the Abbey, then the island-like terrace complete with a turning watermill wheel might be the place for you to enjoy a meal or a beverage.
If that doesn’t impress you, then the car park certainly will. It’s, quite literally, under a rock in an actual prehistoric cave!
Service and Facilities
Le Moulin de l’Abbaye offers everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Secure private car park, Wi-Fi internet, bar, Michelin Star restaurant and anything else you might fancy. I am happy to report that there is room service too!
The members of staff are smart, polite, respectful, attentive and eager to help. In fact, the service they provide is second to none!
My room was in the building opposite the main hotel. The room was very spacious with great views towards the river and the bridge. There was a king size bed, a lounge area with sofa and coffee table, TV, built in wardrobe with plenty of space in it, a safe and a minibar. The bathroom was spacious and clean. There was a big bath with an overhead shower. The lavatory was across the hall from the bathroom.
Food and Drink
If you are a foodie or just after a fine dining experience, Le Moulin de l’Abbaye’s Michelin Star restaurant is bound to impress you. The quality of its food is exceptional and the service guarantees a dining experience to remember. Perfect for celebrations and special occasions.
If you prefer to have a meal in your room, then order the selection of local delicacies from the room service menu. It’s a very generous platter, big enough for two light suppers. The room service breakfast is very good too.
