It’s nice when things go the way you want them to go. It’s even nicer when people treat you with the respect you treat them. It doesn’t happen overnight but it does happen and there are things you can do to accelerate that process. It’s about confidence and here’s what you can do to let your self-confidence shine:

Look the part

Self-confidence is not just about how you feel but how you look too. If you look like you know your “stuff”, the chances are people will perceive you as an expert in your field. They are likely to take you more seriously, listen to what you have to say and do what you ask them to do.

Your appearance matters just as much as your skills set when it comes to self-confidence. If you want to come across as a business person, for example, then you need to look like one. Wearing a sharp tailored suit will lift up your self-confidence and make you feel like the person you want to be.

It will lead people to believe that you are a business person. They will take you seriously and treat you the way they treat other business people. You don’t have to waste time to convince them who you are and what you do. You can spend that time to talk “business” with them.

Act the part

Body language is just as important as dressing the part. There is no suit in the world that will make you look confident if your body language is not on point. Pull back your shoulders, lift up your chin, open your chest and restrain yourself from making too many gestures with your hands.

Your handshake is an extension to your self-confidence – grip the hand of the other person firmly and confidently. Remember that a firm handshake doesn’t mean you have to crush the other person’s hand.

Believe in yourself

Looking the part and acting the part can only do so much. You need to believe in yourself because that self-belief is your only prerequisite for your self-confidence.

Your inner self-confidence comes from your knowledge, skills and abilities. They are the building blocks of your competence. You are just as capable and competent as the next person and you need to let that show.

You’ve worked hard for it and you owe it to yourself to believe in it.

Self-confidence is as much about the outside as it is about the inside. You can be the most gifted, able and competent person to walk this planet but if you don’t look the part and your body language makes you look nervous and unsure, then nobody will take you seriously.

Believe in yourself and look it. Show everyone how good you are and present yourself accordingly. That’s how you let your self-confidence shine and that’s how you get wherever in life it is you want to be.
